Now, let me tell you about the Death card…

It was 2016, and I was sitting cross-legged on my bedroom floor, trying to quiet the knot in my stomach as I pulled cards about my marriage. The Death card slipped out of the deck – again. The third time that week.

I quickly shuffled it back in.

Looking at that stark image, I knew what Death meant in tarot – transformation, endings, necessary changes. But I wasn’t ready for what it was trying to tell me. Not even close.

Sure, I felt lonely most of the time.

Especially when my husband stopped talking to me for days to “punish” me for asking him to do things like washing the pot after I made chili or spending more time with me instead of playing video games.

I thought about leaving him at least once a month, so pulling Death wasn’t exactly a surprise.

And yet…I’d spent five years married to my husband, moved to Miami with him so he could pursue his dream of becoming a doctor, gave up my community in Denver to be with him.

If I left him…all of that would just go to waste.

On top of that, I was terrified I wouldn’t be able to find another partner. Before I met my ex, I thought I would never meet someone who really understood me. If I left him…would I end up being single for the rest of my life???

I remembered how good it was in the beginning. How loved he made me feel. How secure I felt with his body next to mine in bed. I couldn’t just…leave, could I?

So I kept shuffling that Death card back into the deck. For five more years.

Here’s the thing about intuition, tarot, and astrology – they’re incredible tools for understanding ourselves and our patterns. But sometimes, even when the cards are literally screaming at us (looking at you, Death card), we need something more.
